Addition

Addition is a fun math concept to teach and my class is doing awesome at it! We've been doing some fun stuff this week to practice addition concepts. We begin our math time by doing dot talks. I show them a card of scattered dots or dots in a ten frame and they take turns telling the class how many they counted and how they counted them. It was interesting the variety of ways they counted the dots.

We've also been practicing making an addition sentence and building it with cubes. I call out a number and they have to make it however they choose and write an addition sentence to go with it. Again, such a cool activity to see the different ways they chose to make the number.

We also make our own addition stories. On this day, I let them choose any number to use to create their story, illustrate it, and write the addition sentence to go with it. They loved sharing their stories on the document camera to the class.

I was super excited to find this cool magnetic ten frame kit on clearance! Each day one student gets a turn to make an addition sentence for the class to read. They choose how many yellow and how many red, write their sentence, and then the rest of the class reads it to make sure it is correct.

That's all that I have taken pictures of so far! Haha but I am sure there will be more to come! Teaching addition is going so for so good :)
