Bats and Spiders, Oh My!

I decided October is designated for Bats, Spiders, and Pumpkins! So for the first week of the month of Halloween we learned about Bats. Everyday we focused on something different about bats by reading different non-fiction books and watching educational YouTube videos. As we learned new facts, we added them to our "Can, Like, Have" poster everyday.

Monday: We learned some basic bat facts

Tuesday: We focused on the parts of a bat

Wednesday: We learned about echolocation, then sang and danced to one of my favorite YouTube songs. The kids are obsessed with it so much that now it has become a reward for them to earn. During writing time, they even started DRAWING echolocation in their illustrations! Fascinating :)

Thursday: We focused on the life cycle of a bat (The kids seemed to find this very intriguing)

Friday: We focused on Nocturnal vs. Diurnal and then tried to write an informational sentence about bats with our bat project to end the week.

One of our centers this week was to sort pictures by beginning sound for the letters to spell BAT.

Next, we learned all about spiders!! Let me just start off by saying I usually never teach about spiders, because I can't handle looking or touching real pictures of spiders lol, but this year I decided to muster up some courage and teach about the disgusting creepy crawlies. Surprisingly, most of my class was squirmy also, but very interested in the topic.

Monday: We started spider week by learning some basic spider facts.

Tuesday: Then we learned about the parts of a spider and made a spider, counting each part.

Wednesday: We focused on the difference between spiders and insects.

Thursday: We learned about the life cycle of a spider.

We've been practicing patterns in math so we made spider web patterns.

And I meant to buy a package of a ton of spiders, but kept forgetting! lol so I pulled out a mix of spiders and bugs and challenged the kids to put the correct number of spiders and insects into each spider web.

And now for PUMPKINS! Oh my goodness, I love pumpkins! So I'm giving pumpkins....2 weeks!
