Plants and Earth Day!

The best way to learn about plants is to plant some seeds! It's my yearly tradition for my class to plant grass seeds to make grass people for Open House. Some years the grass grows wonderfully to the point where we can give them a haircut.

We used plastic forks to paint a tulip garden and our fingers to paint the stems and leaves. Then we wrote sentences about our flowers.

We used bingo daubers to help us practice addition.

Everyday we focus on a different part of a plant: seeds, roots, stems, leaves, flower, fruit. On the day we learn about stems, I love doing the rose experiment and the kids are always so fascinated. It's a great way to show them how the stem truly works as a straw.

And then we made rhyming flowers! The kids got to choose which rhyming family they wanted and had to write rhyming words on the petals. The turned out so pretty with a variety of families!

Throughout the week we also continuously add to our informative poster about plants. The kids come up with the facts, write the words, and illustrate. Everyday before we begin, we read everything we learned prior.

Plants make a great segway into learning about the importance of Earth Day and taking care of the Earth. I love love loved the enthusiasm the kids had while creating our Earth Day poster. We went on a hunt to find things with the recycling symbol, sorted different kinds of recyclables, and  made tear art Earth's.
