Ants & Flies

Kids love all things non-fiction! So we learned about ants this week and then ended the week with flies.

We created our own math stories using ants. I told the kids to choose addition or subtraction and after completed we all shared them. They turned out great. The kids are so good with math this year.

Our informational ant poster.

We read "Two Bad Ants" and then thought about what shenanigans we'd do if we were tiny like those little ants.

I also made numbered ant hills 0-10 with addition and subtraction cards. The kids each received a math problem and then were challenged to go place their card onto the correct ant hill. We kept this game going until all cards were placed correctly. They loved it.

Since we've been learning about so many different insects, I let each child choose a fake insect and investigate it's features using a magnifying glass. Then they were challenged to draw it and write a sentence using an adjective to describe their bug.

We ended the week with flies and one of my favorite stories, The Jazz Fly! It is a silly, musical story about a fly in a band. The kids made their own fly and then choose which of the 4 instruments in the story that they'd want to play. I was bummed it was so close to the last day of school otherwise I could've displayed them around the room since they looked so cute.
