Silly Sentences & Letter of the Week: M, S, P

Sentence Patterning Chart
I love our weekly sentence patterning charts. Each week we make a new poster and each day we focus on a different part of speech. The columns are always the same color and I always add pictures to go with it especially for the nouns. This is a great activity to practice sentence structure, adding details, and is also great for ELD kids.

The sentence patterning chart can also be sung to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell".
Example: "The juicy apples jumped, the juicy apples jumped, the juicy apples jumped happily at school."

  • Red - Adjectives (we refer to these as "describing words")
  • Black - Nouns (we refer to these as "people, animals, and things")
  • Green - Verbs (we refer to these as "movement words")
  • Orange - Adverbs (we refer to these as the "how we moved words")
  • Purple - Prepositional Phrases (we refer to these as "where are we?")

After we have completed our chart, we refer to this time as "Silly Sentences" to see if our sentence makes sense or is silly. The kids come place a magnet in each column and then we read the sentence we created together. The kids absolutely love this activity! I catch them creating their own sentences when they have finished work early or during afternoon play time.

Pocket chart sight word sentences. I've always built the sentences in front of them, but this year I printed some sentence frames using our sight word of the week for the kids to read.

The kids love the "door passwords". I keep 4 words up per week and the kids love to read them while waiting in line to come in or out.

1st week of school stuff! I like to choose a fun book and spend some time on a book a day for the first 2 weeks. This year I chose: Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Baby Shark, Pete the Cat Out of This World, Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes, and Pete the Cat and the Magic Sunglasses.

Letter of the Week: Mm

  • project - monsters
  • fine motor - markers

We also did a letter Mm hunt. The kids cut up magazines to find as many Mm's and pictures that start with Mm as they could find. Each team did this activity as their center and the team with the most Mm's won a smelly sticker. The red team won this week with 28! I was blown away.
