Letter/Sound Recognition RTI

After my recent second trimester testing, I discovered that I still have a handful of kids that are still struggling badly with letter and sound recognition. So I switched up ability groups and have been revamping my RTI center time for this group to really focus on mastery. In the past few weeks I have already started to notice improvements in them and I am so excited! One of my favorite things, as well as theirs, is to make letters out of play-doh and then listen to themselves say the letter and sound through the PVC pipe phone (constructed for me by my awesome handy dad)!
1. We start our group by going through our alphabet book one page at a time using movements to help remember sounds.
2. Then we choose a letter to make out of play-doh. Before they make it, they watch me slowly make the letter as we discuss how many pieces we will need while describing the shapes (short, long, curly, etc)
3. Then the kids construct their letter
4. After the group has made the uppercase and lowercase letter, they anxiously await for their phone to ring aka me making ringing noises!
5. When the phone rings, we answer it, recite the letter name and sound 5 times.
Another activity they love is what I call, "The Mystery Letter Challenge". I put magnetic letters into a plastic cookie jar. We shake it up, pull one letter out, show everyone as we say the letter and sound, then place it on a magnetic tray, and then pass the jar to the next person. After we have gone through every letter, we work together to put them in ABC order and then finish by singing the alphabet song! I'll have to take a picture of it tomorrow!
