Read Across America Week!

I love Read Across America Day and I think celebrating reading and motivating students to enjoy reading are wonderful things! So this year I asked my school principal if I could turn Read Across America Day/Dr. Seuss Day into a week long celebration for the entire school! She said yes! So I planned the entire week and am stoked! I created dress up days inspired by Dr. Seuss books and various activities for the entire school to participate in.
Monday: Pajama Day for The Cat in the Hat
Tuesday: Crazy Socks Day for Fox in Socks
Wednesday: Mix-Match Day for Wacky Wednesday
Thursday: Green Day for Green Eggs and Ham
Friday: Crazy Hair Day for Thing 1 and Thing 2

The top 3 most spirited classes each day will receive a Sneech star. On Friday, I will calculate the classes with the most Sneech stars and award them with prizes! There will be 3 winners in K-3, 3 winners in 4-8, and 1 overall winner in k-8.

First place: birthday cake

Second place: Dr. Seuss pencils

Third place: Dr. Seuss bookmarks.
The top overall winner will receive Dr. Seuss hats!

I ordered all of the prizes from Oriental Trading Company.

We also will be having lots of visitor readers throughout the week including the superintendent, members of the board of education, retired teachers, high school students, and parents.

Lastly, every class is encouraged to participate in the "Read this Book"! Poster contest. Students will choose their favorite book and create a poster advertising what the story is about and why their classmates should read it. Each teacher will choose the top 3 posters and those posters will be displayed in the school cafeteria for reading material during lunch time :)

I created a contest for my kiddos called the "Read Across America Challenge". They got to color a state in for every book they read and when they get to 50 they would get a special prize! This friend was the first one to complete the challenge! Yay!

Lastly, the 4th grade class that won spirit week surprised me with this wonderful thank-you card! It made all of the hard work planning and implementing the week worth it!
