It is one of my favorite units to teach, because there are so many fun, hands-on activities that can be done to make it more meaningful. Here are some fun things we did last week:
The white rose experiment - to put it simply, this was awesome! We learned all about how the stem is like a straw and to demonstrate how the stem feeds the flower we put white roses into water with food coloring. It only took a couple of hours before some started changing. The next day they were absolutely beautiful!
Planted grass and flowers - we learned about the planting process and tools we use (soil, seeds, water, gloves, and a shovel). We planted flowers in one cup and planted grass seed in another cup. They designed a face to attach to our grass cups so that when they grow our cup faces will have grass hair!
Painted tulips with forks and fingers - they started by dipping their fork into the paint to create their tulips, then finger painted the stems, and lastly used their thumbs to make the leaves.
We made a word family rhyming flower - they chose a rhyming family, wrote it on the center of their flower, and then wrote rhyming words on the petals. They turned out so cute so these are definitely hanging from the ceiling.
And here are some of our fun schema posters and anchor charts -
I think One of their favorite parts from this unit was learning about vegetable plants from the "Tops and Bottoms" book. This was a fun chart to create together. I would hold up a vegetable picture and they would would put their arms up if they thought it grew above ground or they'd touch the ground if they thought the vegetable grows under the ground.
