All About Caterpillars/Butterflies

Another one of my most favorite units to teach is all about caterpillars and butterflies! I start off the week by bringing in my cups of caterpillars that I ordered from Insect Lore. The kids are always fascinated to check them each day to see how they've changed. They go through their life cycle process surprisingly quickly!

Day one

Week two

Week three

And now on to some fun activities!
We started by reading, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle.

Afterwards, we became authors and illustrators and wrote our own book. The kids loved this activity!

We watched the movie (which was a super cute version) and then made a retell baggy, and reread the story.

Since I have a class Facebook page, I wanted to find a cute version for families so that their child could retell the story to them when the got home. I ended up finding this one!

Here we are all ready to retell the story together.

Sun catcher Butterflies - glue the butterfly template to wax paper, glue tissue paper into the wing holes, dry, cut, add pipe cleaner antennas, and hang up in the window!

Finger painting caterpillar addition - they got to choose 2 colors and their own math sentence to create their caterpillar or as they pronounce it "calerpillar". Too cute.

Coffee Filter butterflies - use markers to color a coffee filter, completely spray with a water bottle, dry, then scrunch it up into a clothespin, add a face and pipe cleaner antennas!

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Caterpillar number line with sentence strips

Building CVC butterflies - put wings together to build new words and then illustrate the word you created

Addition bingo dauber caterpillars - choose 2 colors and bingo daub your own caterpillar and math sentence

Matching butterfly wings by Reading CVC words to match with the correct picture.

And lastly, our anchor chart of the life cycle that we created together.
