Rhyming & Blending

This year I've been trying out teaching the letters and sounds in a different order than what I've previously taught....and it's been wonderful! I've started teaching letters in an order that allows me to start teaching blending cvc words and rhyming to the kids that are ready for it while giving some exposure to the kids that aren't fully ready yet. So far I've taught my class: S, M, A, T, B, H, and next week is C. These letters make LOTS of words that rhyme with "at". My lower kids get more letter sound focus and oral rhyming; whereas, the more advanced kids are using these letters to dive into blending cvc words, writing and reading rhyming words. The whole class is Nsync with which letters were learning, but there is more differentiation taking place which is essential for every classroom.

Here she is making a "rhyming house" of words that rhyme with -at.

Here he is adding just the beginning letter to write and illustrate rhyming words.

They are using linking cubes to build rhyming words, illustrate them, and then read them. This is usually an activity I'm not able to bust out for a few months and I've already been able to use it this year!

Working together to brainstorm rhyming words, write them, and illustrate them in our "rhyming house" poster.

Making new rhyming words using the letters we've learned. They loved taking turns making a new word, sounding it out, and saying it fast.

Another fun way to make Rhyming words is by using magnetic letters and a giant oil pan!

These are just a handful of my favorite activities this past week that have really enhanced learning about cvc words and rhyming words.
