I set out replicas of the life cycle and magnifying glasses. Everyday the kids love inspecting the caterpillars to see how they've changed. We discuss any changes we discover.
We learn about the parts of a caterpillar and insect. Label the parts. And sing the song, "head, thorax, abdomen" to the tune of "head, shoulders, knees and toes".
Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen.
Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen.
Eyes, and legs, antennas too.
Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen.
We read lots of books, scholastic magazine, and watch brain pop videos in order to add facts to our "are/can/have" poster.
We made coffee filter butterflies. Start by coloring with marker, spray with water, let dry, and voila!
We wrote about butterflies!
We used bingo daubers to make addition caterpillars.
We finger painted caterpillars.
We used magnifying glasses to see tiny pictures on butterfly thorax. Then we would practice spelling the CVC word to match each picture.
One of my sweet lil friends was so excited to show me that she wore a butterfly shirt so I let her hold the caterpillars!
We made the life cycle of a butterfly. The kids looooved making this.
We made suncatcher butterflies.
We read The Hungry Caterpillar and then did a directed drawing and wrote a sentence about them.
And then we wrote and illustrated our own version of the hungry caterpillar.
And then we made the hungry caterpillar retelling bags and watched the movie.
My least favorite part of having classroom caterpillars. I hate moving the chrysalides into the habitat!!
So hoping these lil guys complete the life cycle by next Thursday!!!
They emerged over spring break, but I was able to keep them alive until Monday! One poor lil one didn't make it so I thought it might be neat to set him out and let the kids look at him up close with the magnifying glass. They were amazed. We had so much fun releasing our butterflies.
One butterfly had a messed up wing so he kept trying to fly away and the landing right back on my shoulder.
