Motivating Young Writers

My class this year just loves to write! Here are some ways that make my kids want to write, write, write!

We just started learning about narrative writing (3 sentence story with a beginning, middle, and end). Independently writing 3 sentences in kindergarten is crazy, but it's the standard. So I gave the kids a writing office (a mobile writing resource with word wall, alphabet, number words, color words), and their own writing folder to keep their work so we can continue working on it each day. Holy moly! They love writing even more than ever!

Everyday we brainstorm a sentence together and write it on the board to model conventions and sounding out unknown words. Then they come up with their own stories. Monday's they write the first sentence. Tuesday they write the second sentence, Wednesday's they write the last sentence. Thursday's we share our stories on the document camera. All but one of my kids opted to share! So proud of them, wow!

Another motivator is the class mailbox and postcards. The kids love to write letters to their friends. When I see that the mailbox flag is up, I find a free spot of time in the day and we read and deliver our mail to our friends.

I also have My celebrity writer award which is a huge motivator. Which is an award I give out once a month to a student with great writing. I display their paper on a special board, they get a trophy, and they always get to be third in line.
