Let's start with Election Day! My mom, dad, and I built a voting booth and ballot box out of a wardrobe box and table cloth! The kids loooooooved it. We discussed how the election works and the main candidates in the running. Then we played patriotic music as we took turns going inside the booth to vote. They chose a card and put it in the box. After everyone voted, we made tallies on the graph to see who won president. Our vote was so close! 11 Trump, 10 Clinton. I still have it up in my room, because my kindergarteners and first graders enjoy coming in during recess to vote again. I have so many tickets left, so might as well let them keep voting for fun! :)
It's always a bummer how fast November and December fly by, because they are two very fun months in the classroom! So far this month, we have completed our thankful turkeys.
And then we read "Turkey Trouble" and came up with ways to save the turkey. The kids completed the sentence "Save a turkey, eat ______". It was quite a bit of prep, but I'm always amazed at how well my kids do with big projects whole class. They turned out fabulous!
This has nothing to do with November lol but it is a fun activity to have every child engaged and learning. We have been working hard on sounding out words in order to write them. We have a routine now so that the kids know when we do this activity, they are supposed to sit on the outside of our carpet, get a whiteboard, marker, eraser, and they can choose 3 objects from my random objects drawer lol. I tell them a word, they repeat, we sound it out together using the Elkonin boxes and then they are challenged to write it. They like to keep tallies as points for when they get one correct. They lay down on the carpet and always have a fun time with this activity.
Next week, I'm planning on having my kiddos make turkey headbands and Native American vests! Pictures to come soon!
Update, we learned the song "10 Little Indians" and then acted it out! The kids looked so stinking cute!
We made turkey headbands too! And Native American vests out of brown grocery bags. The kids loved decorating them, but oh my they were no fun cutting out!
My kids loved directed drawing. So we tried to draw Indians. The kids were amazed with their drawings so I displayed them all in the classroom window!
