Penguins and More!

Penguins!!! This week we have been learning all about penguins! Daily we read a couple of pages in a non-fiction penguin book and also a new fiction story each day. The kids are loving learning about penguins! After each non fiction page we read, we add new learned facts to our "like, can, have, are" poster as well as label a part of our Emperor Penguin. We've also been watching great age appropriate YouTube videos showing penguins diving, jumping, sliding, huddling, swimming, waddling, caring for their eggs, and even escaping a predator (the seal). Here is some fun stuff from our penguin week!

After reading many stories about Tacky the Penguin, we wrote about what makes each of us special and different just like Tacky who marches to the beat of his own drum. I loved hearing what the kids thought was special about themselves. Such a sweet and positive project.

We learned that the Emperor penguin is the tallest penguin standing at 4 feet tall! So we took turns seeing who was taller or shorter than our life size penguin. They loved this oh my goodness lol

We also learned about ice fishing. So for one of our centers this week I made some fish with CVC words on them. The kids went "fishing for rhyming words". Their faces were so cute when they caught a fish.

We also learned about how penguin parents care for their eggs. So we practiced what we called our "caring for our babies race". It was about the cutest race I've ever seen lol. They couldn't touch their egg or let it hit the ground.

Since we've learned all of the solid shapes, the kids did some race experiments using different sized shapes and other objects like toy cars and marbles. They were stoked to see which object would be faster.

I liked this center because it is a great way for the kids to practice reading sight words without even realizing it. They used linking cubes to spell sight words on the flashcards. At first they weren't sure they could do it, but then soon realized they could actually build words and read them!
