Science - CATERPILLARS, BEES, LADYBUGS

Caterpillars/Butterflies

Life cycle of a butterfly - this was a fun one to do as a whole class; however, the kids were pretty distraught that I left out the J shape stage lol

coffee filter butterflies - the kids used markers to color a coffee filter, and then we sprayed them outside with water, let them dry, and then voila turned them into a butterfly to hang around our classroom.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar directed drawing and independent writing. I love these so much I am keeping these up for Open House.

We of course had two cups of caterpillars for our classroom from Insect Lore. We got to watch them change into each stage of their metamorphosis.

Bittersweet releasing our butterflies in the school garden. However, our butterflies were very cooperative lol and let each child hold one for a few seconds.

Very Hungry Caterpillar book - the kids got to be authors and illustrators in our very own book to set out and share at Open House. Each page is a different day of the week and the kids got to choose what food they wanted their caterpillar to eat each day. Quite the variety of foods were chosen lol my favorite was "ritz crackers".

Bees

Marble painting bumblebees

Non-fiction bee writing activity

Our informational bee poster. I love adding real pictures to their bee facts. It helps them remember the fact and see an example in real life.

Bee hive subtraction - the kids loved this challenge. Each bee card has a different subtraction sentence and each bee hive has a number 0-10. They had to work together to place each card onto the correct beehive in order to show their understanding.

Ladybugs

Grouchy Ladybug - after reading the story, we made our own grouchy ladybugs and then wrote about what makes us grouchy/grumpy lol their sentences were hilarious! My favorite was "I am grumpy when my mom and dad don't let me have cake".

Ladybug addition - we created our ladybugs together and then the kids got to complete their own addition sentence to match their spots. We used bingo daubers for the spots.

And of course our information ladybug poster with pictures :)

With only 14 days left of school I wasn't planning on doing anymore big non-fiction units, but after our last day of ladybugs the kids excitedly asked "What are we learning about next week?? Can we learn about ants??" I was like well alright most definitely! Now to go plan some ant shenanigans :)
