The Post Office Center & Community Helpers

This week we have been learning about community helpers. My favorite center was "The Post Office". The kids loved it so much that I decided to make it a daily free time center. The choose a postcard from the post office basket, write their sentence, and stamp on a stamp or sticker. Then the put in into our classroom mailbox and put the flag up so that I know we need to do a delivery later.
When it is time for mail delivery, I pull out one postcard at a time, read it out loud, and then the student who wrote the letter comes up to take the letter and hand delivery it to their friend. It's the best feeling watching their faces light up, because they feel so special. And how awesome that they are motivated to write more independently for their free time!! I was so excited when I recieved mail too!
Now on to the rest of the community helpers inspired centers! To celebrate dentists and dental health month we brushed our yellow teeth white with paintbrushes! Seriously, cutest, most fun project ever.
Pretending we're bakers by Using spatulas to Flip cookies with sight words.
We also played "Trash or Treasure" by sorting real CVC words vs. nonsense CVC words. They loved throwing the trash into our mini trash can.
We also pretended to be doctors by performing surgery on letters sorting them into short, tall, or tails.
Then we pretended to be hair stylist and used mirrors to read sight words.
And then we pretended to be teachers by counting the dots on the chalkboard.
And then we practiced blends with chef hats. We sorted pictures into their blend: th, ch, sh, wh.
It was a fun busy week!
