Word Families

My class this year has been struggling with rhyming and blending so I've really been focusing on word families which have helped a lot! There are so many fun hands on ways to practice word families. My favorite is creating a word family rhyme house. We brainstorm words, sound them out together, and then illustrate each word. The kids love adding words to the house so much so that sometimes we run out of room!
I also found these awesome word family posters at my local teacher store that are great visuals each week. You can barely see it hanging on the pocket chart in this picture (a spinning top). The kids also LOVE creating their own words by manipulating the letter cards.
After we've practiced word families throughout the week with various other activities during our morning centers we always come up with our four favorites to write, illustrate, and read!
