We learned the parts of an apple and labeled the parts.
We did an apple taste test and each sampled a bite of red, yellow, and green apples. Afterwards, they picked their favorite color, wrote their name on the paper apple, and hung it on our apple tree. Then we counted all of the apples to see which one was the class most favorite.
We learned the letter sound for Aa and made little apples using the lowercase a dicut. They also practiced writing the word "apple". Then we made an A poster by writing and illustrating things that start with A. Then we highlighted every A we could find on our poster.
We learned about Johnny Appleseed and made Johnny hats! They looked so adorable in these!
Then we did a directed drawing of Johnny Appleseed. Directed drawings are one of my most favorite things and the kids love doing them too. They truly feel like artists and their artwork looks great in our window!
We had an apple treats taste test. They loved this! They got to sample a bite of yummy things made from apples like applesauce, apple juice, apple fritter, apple pie, caramel apple, apple muffin, apple chips.
For 5 senses week, we focused on a different sense everyday followed by an activity and then added a piece to our headband.
Day 1: Sight - we talked about our eyes and things we can see. I passed out mirrors and had the kids discover their eye color. We made an eye color graph to see what color eyes we have the most of. We also went on a scavenger hunt outside to find things that we could see. They illustrated their findings while walking around with a paper and clipboard.
Day 2: Hear - we sat in a circle and took turns shaking a mystery can making guess as to what we thought was inside based on our hearing. So fun! We had: bells, water, noodles, sand, money.
Day 3: Touch - again we sat in a circle and took turns reaching into a can to guess what we thought was inside based on our sense of touch. We discussed descriptive words of how each one felt in order to justify our guesses. We had: sponges, Kleenex, pinecone, rocks, sand, noodles.
Day 4: Smell - we took turns smelling mystery cups of strong smells and then guessed what was inside. We had: cinnamon, chili powder, coffee, onion, brown sugar, cocoa powder.
Day 5: Taste - the most highly anticipated day! Haha the kids HAD to try each thing and then they checked on their paper if they liked it or not. Each sample fit into one of the 5 types of taste: savory, salty, sour, sweet, and bitter. They tried: chocolate, parmesan cheese, green olives, limes, and pretzels.
Then we were able to complete our headband and Mr. Potato Head.
We also sifted through old Scholastic magazines to cut out pictures of objects to glue onto our 5 senses collage.
