The past few weeks have been entertaining filled with some random fun things to make learning fun.
Let's start with the letter of the week, the letter I.
It was so fun having the kids dig for insects! After they found some, they got to choose which insect to illustrate and write about. Then they had so much fun burying them for the next group.
Against my better judgement lol I pulled out all of my instruments for I and let the kids take turns picking one and playing it. They even had a little concert that I videotaped. We definitely sanitized like crazy after using them!
In our Wonders curriculum this week, it focused on the book, "How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?" We read books about dinos and watched movies about dinos. Then I had dinosaur toys and flashcards that the kids could play with. They loved it! Our first extension activity was to put together the sentence and draw how their dinosaur gets to school. I was impressed with the variety of fun ways they came up with.
Then we made giant dinosaurs! This took a lot of prep, but the kids loved it and they look adorable. I let the kids choose to make a triceratops or a stegosaurus. I took turns explaining the next step for both groups. It turned out way better than I expected!
This week we also got to use the ProWise Computer! IT IS AMAZING! We only had it for a day and a half, but managed to have lots of fun with it. We took turns trying to spell CVC words, played memory, completed the letter I on Starfall.com, and practiced making shapes with tangrams on ABCya. It is a touch screen computer that multiple kids can touch at the same time! So we definitely had spelling contests on it.
Since we are learning about shapes this week, I challenged the kids to construct shapes using popsicle sticks. I was so proud of these boys that made them all!
We also recently started something new and engaging when we learn numbers. We talk about different ways to make a number and then I pass out a post-it note to every student. Then they illustrate a way to show that number. This week we made our #4 poster.
We also used candy corn to decompose simple numbers. Again, I was so impressed with their ability to complete this perfectly. Their reward was they got to eat their 5 candy corn when they completed their work.
Lastly, I was wanted something fun to have the kids spell CVC words using the letters we have learned and practice blending. I found these vests in a random old box and they were exactly what I was looking for. I scrambled up the kids, told them their word, and they had to work together to make it.
That's all for now! Now to start focusing on Halloween activities! :)
